Yes, most all of us venture to Wal-Mart. It's convenient to shop for just about everything you need under one roof. I believe I've only met one person who literally despises the place and would never step foot in the parking lot, let alone the building. He's from New York anyway so does that even count? Who knows.
Okay, back on topic . . . at Monday's County Commissioners' meeting just as it was about to wrap up, someone brought up the idea that we needed a Wal-Mart in Tattnall County and should send them a letter saying so. The commissioners all seemed to agree that a letter should be sent to someone to find out why we didn't have one of those super mega centers too. Huh. I wonder if they took the time to poll all of our small business owners in the county to see if they, too, wanted a Wal-Mart. Probably not. I could sit right here and list a number of businesses that would be quickly sucked under.
Tattnall County is almost completely surrounded by Wal-Marts anyway so there's not much of a chance that we'd get one unless Wal-Mart just had an incredible surplus in their building budget and decided, yeah, why not. If that happened, the big story wouldn't be that Tattnall County was getting a Wal-Mart, it would be which CITY was getting a Wal-Mart. Talk about county rivalry then! Whew. Remember it wasn't too many years ago that we seemed to send that technical school running for another location! You know, come to think of it, that would make for some interesting headlines.

I agree. Folks around here are so fixated on getting a Wal-Mart. There are Wal-Mart stores all around Tattnall County. I think supporting local businesses is more important than saving 30 cents on toilet paper. I don't see the appeal of Wal-Mart anyway. They have the worse customer service I've ever seen and many, many stores are mis-managed. I don't shop there and GLADLY pay a little extra to shop "local" and get the kind of service that I deserve and expect. This is a "Wal-Mart Nation" and I think that Tattnall County is lucky to be Wal-Mart free. Growth is important for a community for many reasons, mainly a larger tax base and availability of more services. I think new smaller businesses is far better than a big box mega-store. The backbone of Tattnall County was formed from our local businesses and we need to support them.
Not only Wal Mart!! Did you know that O'Reiley Auto Parts is part of the Wal Mart family!!!!From Sams wife side of the family!!
We need to spend our money with the local business and get them going. I'd rather pay more than buy at Wal Mart.
Wal-Mart is not best of all options. Take a look at Vidalia. Wal-Mart ran most of the downtown clothing stores out of business and the grocery stores are hurting. Support the local businesses and forget Wal-Mart. The little savings you'll get is not worth the headaches of traffic jams, additional red lights, etc. Keep the small town atmosphere in Reidsville.
As a struggling small business owner I feel that opening a Wal-Mart in Tattnall County would not only cause our business to close but many others. There is very little that Wal-Mart has that can't be found in our county. By the time you drive to one of the area Wal-Marts you've spent your savings in gas. Support our community and save gas, shop locally!!
I dont shop at Walmart and never will. Walmart destroy's small towns and all the small locally owned businesses will definatly be hurt. Walmart has caused a lot of companys to go bankrupt, to include company's they do business with (rubbermaid, vlasic).Read the book "Walmart is destroying America" it will enlighten you.
Okay, I was raised in Glennville in the 70's. Not much activity then and it sure hasn't changed over the years. In the 80's I moved! Best decision I ever made. Tattnall County doesn't want any one but "family" business in the area. Don't want to share any of the "old family" money. Therefore, Tattnall will never grow. Just ride down any of the streets and look at all the stores that have closed, and no new ones opening. People can't make a living because everyone already shops out of town. It' sad to see the town's dry up. But,the family's (and they know who they are) have always vetoed any new anything coming in. No decent resturant's, so naturally when you go "out" to eat to also shop out of town.
Someone please tell me what local business would be effected by Wal Mart. And I don't mean, Dollar General!
Is anyone else as excited as I am that there will soon be an Alco store opening in Glennville? Supposedly, these stores are comparable to Target and Wal-Mart, only smaller versions. I'm all for supporting local businesses. On the other hand, I also feel that as a consumer I am entitled to have a say about what I chose to purchase and how much money I wind up having to spend. While some may be glad to pay a "little extra" to shop local, others can't afford to and I don't believe consumers always get the kind of service they deserve and expect. I don't think the "family owned" pharmacies in town will take that much of a hit, but honestly we need more variety than two Dollar Stores, a Riteaid and Fred's to chose from.
Apparently no one else is excited about Alco coming.
Remember, the rich own the land and they aren't sell to any one but local's.
I'm another person that's excited about the Alco store opening. I think it's great that we're getting some more stores in town, which also means more jobs for local people. I personally don't care who owns the land or who they sell it too for that matter. Glennville definitely needs new growth.
I agree, Glennville needs to grow. But, when you have certain people that control what is sold and to whom, it makes it kinda hard to get growth into town. What is needed are decent family style sit down restaurants, and more than 1 to choose from would be great. With Hwy 301 going through we should have something to offer. Is the Dairy Queen still there? (I don't live there anymore)But, I agree don't shop Wal Mart! Save the small business man, he'll be there to back you in the long run!
Yeah, the DQ is still in town and recently cleaned up thanks to the new owners. Restaurant-wise Glennville is very limited ... The Hen House (old faithful), Krispy Chic, Huddle House, McDonalds, Hardees, Subway, Papa's Pizza, two Chinese places, old 301 Drive-In (I think), and Santa Maria's (which is the only place to get a steak in town and the fried catfish is excellent). There's also another seafood place next to the old IGA that has started doing take-out meals (I haven't tried it yet). And Mena's is still a local favorite for southern cookin'. I hope I haven't left anyone out. Since I'm in Reidsville all day, I rarely get to try different places in Glennville.
Remember citizens of Tattnall County-- always think outside of the box. It is so easy for us to think with a narrow mind because we do live in a small town. Tattnall County does not have much to offer currently. As a business owner, I hope more people will begin taking risks and opening businesses. Owning your own business will not get you rich over night, but the rewards are great. Especially when you know the shoppers are pleased. Think with an open mind and do all that's possible to help our county prosper!
I am glad we don't have a Walmart here! Besides Walmart destroying small town businesses, how about considering it also destroys your pocketbook. I can never seem to go in a Walmart and buy just what's on "the list" because there is ALWAYS something else I think I need right then! Clothes, appliances, automotive, games, garden supplies, etc. I am usually shocked by the time I check out and find I have spent twice as much as I came there for. I have not been to a Walmart for about 3 months now, and I can tell you I have saved money shopping right here in town. When I go grocery shopping, that's what I come home with. Groceries! If I need something else, I can go about a block and get that item. I never thought I would get burned out going to Walmart considering it has everything under one roof, but I have. Our town may be small, but at least I don't spend all my money at one place. Besides saving time and money, I am also saving gas, with the nearest Walmart 30 miles away. Walmart is not all that. I guess it just depends on how you look at it, and for now, I am quite content to NOT look at it for a while.
we may not need a wal-mart,but we need more resturants in reidsville, maybe even a dollar store in collins. with the gas prices i can barely afford to go to the grocery store to get a few items. I have kids and it's not easy to load them up go all the way to vidalia or to reidsville. It would be nice to not have to go out of town just to get a desent cheep burger. the local businesses charge to much for everything. family dollar is the only one worth really shopping at. I would love to spend my money on these local stores but it to much. maybe if we got some resturants or something into this county it would draw more people to stay in the county to shop. You can't find everything here.
On the Walmart issues. Why would you not want the town to grow. One more, more jobs for everyone that can not find work around here so they have to move away. Save on gas for the distance is not close. And what businesses are you referring to, I see no clothing stores and the grocery stores are way to high. Let the town grow and gives our kids jobs instead of having to leave or having to drive at all hrs of the night to get to work.
Local grocery stores drive there prices up because there is no competition! The price you pay for convenience is not worth it. We are forced to go to Wal-Mart and buy in bulk. I am sorry if that hurts the local grocery store owners pocket. I would rather hurt their pocket as opposed to mine!!! Maybe if they had a little more competition in town, they would come down on their prices! I have the privelege of shopping at an Ingles! It is American owned and proud of it.... Tattnall county needs an Ingles!
