Alcohol on Sunday?

The Georgia Legislature was considering a proposal that would have allowed municipalities to decide if Sunday alcohol sales should be legal. Would you be in favor of allowing each town to decide? If so, do you think Sunday beer and wine sales should be allowed in your town?

Georgia is one of only three states in the country not to allow alcohol sales on Sundays. Quite frankly, this is a stupid law. There is no really good reason to prohibit purchasing on Sunday, as people who are going to drink on the day are going to get it the night before.

Additionally, it prohibits business. Take a look at Bulloch County, for example. They have liquor laws that are sending away businesses such as Red Lobster or The Olive Garden, which refuse to come into the county because they don't sell liquor. It helps stimulate the economy and bring in new growth, and I think that those kinds of businesses are positive growth, but alcohol is part of their bottom line.

I don't see why we can't join the other 47 states in the country and start selling alcohol on Sundays. It's not going to make a big difference in the way things are anyway, as you can purchase 6/7. If that is okay, then I see no reason why it's not okay to sell all seven days of the week.

If you live in Toombs County you can buy alcohol on Sunday, you just need to know where to go nad who to ask......it's done all the time. I don't think the other counties are all that different in Ga.

I don't drink, so I don't have the problem.

I think the Original Founders of our Nation and State gave the respect that is due to God. (Give the craziness a break). We are slowly, as a Nation, forgeting that.

If put to a vote by the great people of Georgia (and Tattnall), I believe it would remain as is.

The true alcoholic will buy the craziness on Saturday, but should respect Sunday as God's Day of Rest.

I find it just plain inconvenient! The die-hard alcoholics are going to have enough supply before midnight on Saturday to get their Sunday fix. As for me, I enjoy going out to dine on weekends. I also enjoy a glass of wine with dinner and, particularly during football season, a beer with my chicken wings while I watch a game somewhere on a Sunday afternoon. Seems like folk in Biblical times drank wine with every meal. I don't see how I'm disrespecting the Almighty with a little of my own on my day of rest.

I agree...is being sober one day a week going to get you into heaven? I think not! If you're gonna drink, you're gonna drink. Who cares what day of the week it is? It's just all these hard-core Bible Belt people who think if they only drink 6 days instead of 7 they'll be ok. Get real.

Don’t get upset with the Biblical Folks, sounds like a good descent person to me. If you’re going to talk alcohol and “Biblical” in the same thought, please get better educated on the matter. The Bible does say “... eat, drink and be merry…”, but if you read the Parable of the Rich Fool (and here it is) in Luke 12:18-20 (New King James Version) “So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’” Sometimes we speak in ignorance (or you simply repeat what others say about the Bible). Maybe if we better understood about new wines, old wines or fermented wines in the Bible, you may understand better. Maybe if you understand about the time (historical time) that Coke was not available at the local convenience store. I would guess they were limited to Water, Wine and Milk in the Bible times. But, before you talk about the Hard Core Biblical stuff, go find a Biblically educated person or simply read the Bible yourself. My Opinion, drinking wine with dinner is no sin. Drinking a beer with your chicken wings on Sunday will not send you to down below. But not respecting God will. This is the Bible Belt People and we love and respect our God. I would ask the local county government that if they did permit Sunday alcohol sales, at least adds a Local Alcohol Tax to it so that something good would come of it. This will help pay for other greatly needed things in our county.

Idiots... nothing but idiots!!! How can you people by any means at all call yourselves educated. This is why Tattnall county will never amount to anything at all. Critics on every possible issue seem to revolve around the basis of religion in this region. I hope that most of you understand that the world does not revolve around Reidsville, GA or Tattnall County for that matter. How can we as a society truly expect to diversify when most of us hold the past as our primer for what we do next. I mean it seems simple to me, there are 47 other states that are allowing alcohol sales on Sundays and obviously there are those who get around the law by simply purchasing their goods on Saturdays It is an outrage to fathom that human beings are truly doing a disservice to their fellow human beings and their deity by the consumption of alcohol on sundays. Tell that to Catholics and see if you get a response you like. I trust not. However; if someone were to take the time to educate our youth and not simply say it is wrong to do this or wrong to do that without giving vague reasoning, then people might understand that is a matter choice rather than a matter of offending ones higher power. I get so frustrated listening to Bobby Sue's uncle Frank's brother who knows the guy who lives by the pear tree on the dirt road that was struck by lightning in 1982 tell me how his "preacher man" constantly harps on the evils of the drink. Get a life this is not 1907...it is 2007. Alcohol as in the past is a part of our being. If we were not meant to have alcohol ever, we would not have ever been given the gift of how to make it in the first place!!! And now that I have your attention and your are ready to blast my comments, might I add that education is truly a wonderful thing. Choice in a society is truly a wonderful thing. Individuality is a wonderful thing. And lastly... dwelling in the past does not create a better future. Ask yourself are you truly better off now than you were 10 years ago...or for that matter 100 years ago. If so why and maybe, just maybe the answer will fall out of the sky and hit you on the head like a fruit from a forbidden tree.

Ok you are now free to blast away at me. I guess I need a laugh or two...so go ahead.

Actually, alcohol IS served on Sundays in Georgia. But, only in certain municipalities that have ordinances allowing this. They usually throw in some stipulation such as a food/alcohol ratio where a business must derive more of their revenue from food than alcohol, thus making the business more Godly I guess. Haha! This makes about as much sense as not being able to have a "totally nude" strip club if you serve alcohol. If you serve alcohol in such an establishment the "dancers" can only be topless. Ooookay. And.. how about going to a bar in a "non-liquor pouring" county in Georgia, only to be able to buy the liquor from the often attached liquor store and pour your own drinks? Makes a lot of sense to me. Technology may advance our civilization, but people will never change. Those that place themselves in what they presume to be a morally superior position will never defer to those down below. The government will continue to micro-manage our lives until we decide enough is enough and form a new government. Then, our troubles can begin anew! Oh, by the way, you can buy illegal drugs 24/7!
